ENG-122 Planning field research
For my field research I am going to visit the Wings Over the Rockies Aviation and Space Museum. When visiting the museum I plan to find out about the evolution of the helicopter, technological advancements over the years, and where the helicopter is going in the future. I hope to complete this task by the end of this week and I think it will help me a great deal with my research.

ENG-122 Internet search tools
The only search engine I use on the Internet is Google. I have always used Google as long as I can remember. I like Google because I think it is clean and organized. There is not a lot of clutter on the page and I can almost always find really good information on my search topic on the first page of results. One thing I do not like about Google is after the first page of results it is hard to find relevant information about the topic. Other than that I think Google is a very good search engine. The other search engine I know about is Yahoo and and MSN. I don't like these search engines because I think they are more cluttered than Google and I don't seem to get as good results with either of them than I do with Google.

ENG-122 Generating Keywords
What were important milestones in the evolution of the helicopter?
- Important- crucial, significant, authoritative
- Milestone- dates, events, occasion juncture
- Evolution- history, development, creation
- Helicopter- chopper
I have generated a list of words that should help the research of my topic go more smoothly. I took the most important words from the above question and found some synonyms I could use in place of those words to maximize the number of sources. I used visual thesaurus to find the synonyms. I also used the technique discussed in class along the Bedford Researcher to help me with the task.
Some ideas for my field research are:
- Interview a licensed pilot
- Interview a flight instructor
- Interview someone who works for the FAA
- Interview someone working in the aeronautical engineering field at the School of Mines or CU Boulder
- Talk with someone who works at an airport
- Meet with someone from the National Guard
ENG-122 Broaden my research topic
After searching the web and other resources, I have decided my I am going to need to broaden my topic. At the beginning, I was going to write about solely on the history of the helicopter. I think I will have a hard time writing a fifteen page paper on just the history. Instead I will broaden my topic to cover not only the history, but also the future. I will research different manufactures, how much they cost, how they fly, and important people in the field. This should help me immensely in achieving a longer more well rounded paper.

- How do helicopters fly?
- How do helicopters without a tail rotor fly?
ENG-122 Exploring My Topic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helicopter This is a very good source for research. It has information on everything from the history of the helicopter to how to fly and the purpose of the controls in the cockpit. One thing I learned from the site is the word helicopter came from the Greek words helik meaning spiral and pteron meaning wing.
http://asms.k12.ar.us/classes/humanities/amstud/97-98/helicptr/webpage.htm This site tells alot about the history of the helicopter and gives a good chronological timeline of the evolution of the helicopter. From this site I learned that some of the earliest recorded concepts of a helicopter came from china around 400 A.D.
http://helicopter-history.org/ This is another good site about the history of the helicopter and is laid out in a series of links sorted chronologically. Each link tells another fact about the development of helicopters during that time period. Paul Cornu took the first flight in a helicopter on November 13, 1907.
http://inventors.about.com/od/hstartinventions/a/helicopter.htm This site has useful information about Igor Sikorsky who was as the site states, "considered to be the "father" of helicopters not because he invented the first. He is called that because he invented the first successful helicopter, upon which further designs were based."
http://www.glue.umd.edu/~leishman/Aero/history.html#Early%20Thinking This website is a great source for the history and evolution of the helicopter. Leonardo Da Vinci contributed to the creation of the helicopter by publishing his drawings of his "aerial-screw" in 1483.

The History of the Helicopter
After careful consideration, I have chosen to write about the history of the helicopter. I have always had a profound interest in flight since I was a little kid. I would love going on family vacations across the country not just to experience new things, but mostly because I knew we would get to fly in a plane. My younger siblings and I would always fight over who gets to sit by the window. I would ultimately prevail! Now as college student, my childhood fascination with flying has influenced my decision to become a helicopter pilot.
As much as I love helicopters and flying, I barely know anything about the helicopter. In fact, there are only a few things I know about the helicopter now that I really think about it. I know a helicopter flies by rotating a two, three or four blade horizontal propeller to create downward thrust to lift the massive machine into the air. I know it has another vertical propeller on the tail of the helicopter that controls the turning of the air craft by speeding up or slowing down. I know that a helicopter can seat one or carry many passengers. Other than that, the rest is unknown.
There are many thing I wish to learn about the helicopter during the research process. For one, I would like to know who invented the helicopter and how it came about. Was there a purpose or reason for the invention? Second, I would like to know how to operate the helicopter. What is the principle function of all of the controls in the cockpit? Third, I want to know about the technological advancements over the years since the helicopter was invented. Last, I would like to know what the future holds for the helicopter.
